The Haunted Bedroom in Talliston, Great Dunmow, UK
Once a fairly ordinary house in the ancient market town of Great Dunmow, the owners of Talliston House and Gardens have transformed the property into a magical labyrinth of rooms. Each is set in a different time and place.
The Haunted Bedroom recreates in nightmarish detail the bedroom of a seven-year-old Edwardian boy complete with books and toys.
Laura’s Cottage, Savannah Georgia, United States
Conveniently located in one of the most haunted cities in the United States, Laura’s Cottage was built in 1799. Although the current owners have completely modernized the space, especially by adding WiFi, its decor remains full of historic character.
Laura is also said to still be very present at the cottage. According to reports from travelers who have rested their weary heads in the house, she is known to open windows and turn lights on and off from time to time.
Dal Pozzo Castle, Piedmont, Italy
Now used as a hotel, this Italian estate has a chilling past.
Way back in 1467, a young woman named Barbara fell in love with an army captain, Matteo. They planned to escape but when her father learned of her affair, he locked her in the tower and exiled Matteo to France. Barbara did not notice the exile and died in the tower, waiting for her return.
Some guests said they can still see her peeking out of the tower window today.
Chateau Pitau castle, Moscow, Russia
This small castle just 10km from Moscow is said to be home to a ghost who appears once a week at midnight. But don’t worry, this impressive rental sleeps nine, so you can back up.
As well as being a fantastically timed ghost, it is also home to several swimming pools, a billiards room, a sauna and acres of gardens. There are many places to escape the scary stories that haunt this castle.
The Haunted Room Apartment, York, UK
This time capsule of over 600 years of a property captures the history behind the city of York in the north of the UK.
The apartment overlooks the iconic York Minster and is clad in distinctive wood panelling. Nearby attractions like the York Dungeon AND Hallowscreamhosted at York Maze, make it the perfect location for some festive thrills.
Bran Castle, Transylvania
A few years ago, what became known as Dracula’s Castle was listed on Airbnb as part of a contest that meant the winners could stay there on Halloween night.
Definitely the scariest stay: guests slept in velvet-lined coffins and took a guided tour of the castle with Dacre Stoker, great-grandson of Bram Stoker.
Even if you can’t stay there right now, we’re pinning our hopes on this becoming an annual tradition.
