The Israeli army says it has carried out an operation in northern Gaza in preparation for the next phases of fighting.

The soldiers are said to have returned to Israeli territory.

“We are at war for our sovereignty, for our existence, and we have set ourselves two fundamental objectives: to eradicate the military and governmental capabilities of Hamas and to do everything possible to bring home the hostages held by the Palestinian Islamic group,” Netanyahu said in a televised speech.
